You should treat your new tattoo as an open wound and always have clean hands for handling it.
Keep the dressing your tattooer has applied on for 24 hours. In the event that the dressing comes off before this time, clean it with warm water and non-fragranced soap (we recommend Dr. Bronners) to remove excess ink and plasma which will appear slimy, air dry and re-wrap with cling film.
For the first three days your tattoo will still be open and susceptible to infection so continue to clean it up to three times a day, air dry and apply barrier cream. We highly recommend hustle butter for this, but for more readily available options either use coconut oil or cocoa butter. After three days, your tattoo should start healing continue to moisturise, and avoid scabbing as much as possible. NEVER pick the scabs on your tattoo, even though you’re tempted we know you are! It will cause drop out on the tattoo.
Alternatively, if either you or your tattooer have applied ‘second skin’, the aftercare is a little different. Please be aware ‘second skin’ doesn’t suit everyone so we will only apply it in the studio if you’ve used it before, for best results, we recommend applying second skin the day after your tattoo. It’s really important that you don’t lock in any germs, so you must clean the tattoo let it air dry and make sure you clean your hands, keep the dressing on until it starts to peel away. This can happen anywhere between 2-5 days after being applied, the tattoo will no longer be an open wound, but won’t be fully healed so continue to use Hustle butter, coconut oil or cocoa butter.
Shower as normal but avoid baths, swimming and vigorous exercise for at least 2-3 weeks after, any concerns contact your tattooer and they will offer further advice.
